Death Cab's second-in-command proves he deserves his title

Chris Walla - Field Manual

As the yang to Ben Gibbard's yin, Chris Walla's always been Death Cab For Cutie's second-most-appealing member, creating the sometimes ethereal, often emotive soundscapes that broke the band to the mainstream while someone else from the band got the credit for Death Cab's songwriting. On his first solo record, it becomes obvious why: As a lyricist, Chris Walla's a great producer. Plaintive songs like "A Bird Is A Song" sound like Death Cab knockoffs-all shape, no scope-and "St. Modesto," though driven by tom-toms and airy guitars, lacks confidence. It's nice Walla's doing his own thing, but it's also clear from Field Manual that in terms of his main band, credit has always been given where credit was due. (BARSUK) Jeff Miller
