Shoegaze for surrendering
Pacificuv - Longplay 2Posted by Laila Hanson on 05-Jun-08 @ 11:21 AM
[4/5]With long, drifting ambient instrumental passages, this literally named and vaguely anonymous platter smells at first like standard issue space rock. Wading further in, though, as the crunchy Stratocasters rip the corners of "Need," the unusual compositional genius of PacificUV starts to make itself overwhelmingly clear. With a symphonic sense of purpose, the volume ratchets ever upward before exhaling through a sequence of lush but ephemeral tracks culminating in the stripped-then-orchestrated majesty of "Orson." Admittedly, like its inky brethren, the song presupposes a fistful of downers, huge speakers and time to listen from end to end, but if this kind of psychonaut rambling is your cup of sky, you'd be hard-pressed to find it done with deeper conviction or more trenchant insight.
