From the first blistering, fuzzy sentiments of Walk It Off, Tapes 'N Tapes shake off the sophomore syndrome, exhibiting a refined, catchy rock 'n' roll menagerie that is leaps and bounds over their 2006 debut, The Loon. On "Conquest," vocalist Josh Grier (aka Tapes 1) borrows only slightly the most rickety vocal takes from a young Black Francis and leads his group through an intoxicating jaunt using mid-'60s pop-rock and retrofied noise-rock recording methods. Replete with jagged guitar, spicy melodies and a superb rhythm section, Walk It Off has an air of nobility throughout--even on songs like "George Michael," which forges a "Faith"-esque chord progression and whimsical façade, a brisk songwriting curve exists. It's rare to pull off an album this succinct and not invite boredom; it's even rarer if it fucking rocks. (XL) Ryan Prado
