Children Of Bodom - Blooddrunk

Without a doubt, Blooddrunk is one of the year's most anticipated metal albums, and it's worth the wait. While Children Of Bodom's songwriting ability is steadily developing, Blooddrunk is, more than anything, an exposition for vocalist/guitarist Alexi Laiho, who absolutely slays throughout. On "Tie My Rope," he sounds like both guys in DragonForce combined, and his inspired excursions add texture to songs that otherwise tend to blur together. Scorching strings aside, Children Of Bodom aren't afraid to lay on near New Age keyboard signifiers, an odd tendency further contradicted by weird, wiry solos that could be either keyboards or hyper-processed guitars (at times, it's the Trans-Siberian Orchestra on a steroid bender). While garish Euro touches like these dial back the menace a little bit, Laiho's shredded vocals and killer riffs still carry the day--and help slice a few arteries along the way.
