Jarboe/Justin K. Brodrick - J2Posted by Laila Hanson on 05-Jun-08 @ 11:33 AM
[3.5/5]There's a whole slew of records where some dude builds a bunch of tracks, and a hired girl punches in vocals on top. You wouldn't think a powerful spirit like Jarboe (ex-Swans, and a longtime solo act) would be interested in such an arrangement, but when Jesu's Justin Broadrick called her, how could she say no? The result is this EP: Six loop-based, sometimes slightly noisy (but never heavy or metallic) rhythmic exercises over which Jarboe murmurs, bleats and occasionally yelps. Her lyrics are mantra-like, a single evocative phrase repeated over and over with slightly altered intonation. The words begin to build a story in your mind, but eventually become just one more sound. Broadrick's music shimmers and crackles, mixing clear electronic tones with static and hiss. With luck, this EP will inaugurate a longer collaboration, but even as a one-off, it's welcome. (THE END) Phil Freeman Official Website: http://www.theendrecords.com
