Odes of old
Imaad Wasif With Two Part Beast - Strange Hexes
There's a certain rustic ambiance coursing through the bulk of the sophomore album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs touring guitarist Imaad Wasif. Strange Hexes' opener, "Wanderlusting," conjures '70s arena-rock arrangements, focusing on tasteful noodling and reverb-heavy guitar leads, while songs like "Halcyon" opt for only slightly less layering with busy yet subdued post-punk abandon. Strange Hexes is an album that's instantly likeable, in no small part due to the fluidity from track to track; Wasif's agile ear for progression and melody adds an earnestness and awe that is palpable with every listen. Hessian overtones are hard to ignore (especially on the album's closing track "Abyss"), but the music is too varied and oft-times beautiful to relegate it strictly to the headbanging realm. It's albums like this that make you remember how great music can be. (SELF-RELEASED) Ryan Prado
