...Hello, cabaret

The Hush Sound - Goodbye Blues

[3.5/5]
There's such an old-timey, theatrical flair to the vocals on Goodbye Blues, at times it almost sounds like Gwen Stefani doing cabaret (in a good way). Greta Salpeter's vocals are huge, expressive and steeped in the traditions of jazz and Tin Pan Alley--and so is the bulk of the music. Which is not to say it doesn't rock: The vocals may be channeling a pre-rock school of sass on "Honey," but the band kick in with a hail of feedback and arena-ready guitar sparks courtesy of Bob Morris, while drummer Darren Wilson swings it like there's no tomorrow. On "Medicine Man," Wilson rocks the jungle toms with more conviction than all but the swinging-est drummers of the '90s big-band revival. When Morris takes the mic on "As You Cry," the sound is just about as close as this band gets to straight-up rock 'n' roll. The album really hits its stride, though, on the bittersweet piano ballads "Hurricane" and "That's Okay," the first of which is blessed with an unexpectedly fragile performance from Salpeter.
