[3/5]Joan Of Arc have a reputation. Like those kids in high school that your parents warned you about, Tim Kinsella's long-running project carries with it certain connotations; "difficult" is a word that gets tossed around a lot, as does "pretentious" and sometimes "brilliant." Joan Of Arc manage to be all those things at the same time. Boo! Human, like all the band's records, has the potential to both impress or alienate, depending on the listener and Saturn's position in the sky. While Boo! is far less indulgent than JOA's most experimental records, it remains a far cry from Kinsella's earliest work in mid-'90s emo forefathers Cap'n Jazz. For a band this prolific, the quality of composition is pretty remarkable, and while a few songs definitely descend into over-produced cut-and-paste hell, there are some astoundingly creative studio flourishes that aid in filling out the band's aggressive, folk-y style of songwriting. Hints of Kinsella's old self pop up on "Just Pack Or Unpack," but mostly, this is Joan Of Arc continuing to blaze away a brave, new, weird path all their own.
