[1.5/5]You can credit Meshuggah for masterminding and popularizing a metallic style that seamlessly integrates off-kilter polyrhythms, jazz-fusion-fueled guitars, scathing vocals and a mathematical attention paid to technical proficiency. You can't blame them for every two-bit wannabe act saddled with the belief that having kick drums follow random breakdowns makes them somehow comparable. The ironic thing about The Respect Issue is that its being pushed as some kind of revolutionary metal album, even though its most shining moments come when Emmure take the gears off of trying to play dumbed-down versions of their favorite Meshuggah riffs and lean more toward the churning and exciting slow-motion punk of "Chicago's Finest" and parts of "Tales From The Burg." Maybe it's time for a directional reconsideration because, as a metal band, Emmure are doing little more than adding to the genre's ever-growing pile of detritus.
