[4/5]"Don't Go To Dream State," one track on this self-titled EP warns. Then it heads straight there, like most of the cuts on this haunting five-song debut from Swervedriver frontman Adam Franklin and Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino. Forsaking the loud, overdriven guitars that once defined the more explosive side of Franklin's old shoegazing outfit, Magnetic Morning's sound is closer to Bowie doing downers in Berlin. The psychedelic chamber-pop of "Yesterday's Flowers" eases you into the disc with a slow, hypnotic variation on the same Phil Spector beat the Raveonettes use, which somehow proves the perfect counterpoint to Franklin's pining vocal line. When they bring the tempo up a notch or two, the duo's brooding reinvention of the Kinks obscurity "The Way Love Used To Be" feels right at home.
