Off With Their Heads - From The BottomAlternative Press - Editorial Intern on 1/22/09 @ 11:40 AM - altpress.com
To those who foolishly believe in a stereotypical "No Idea Records sound," Off With Their Heads stick out like a hitchhiker's thumb. Though as disheveled, bearded and Pabst-soaked as many bands on the Gainesville, Florida label, these Minneapolis residents opt for a classic Bay Area pop-punk approach. They sound like they've absorbed the canonical bands: Fifteen, Crimpshrine, Unfun-era Jawbreaker. Yet Ryan Young sings with a caustic bite that belies the music's melody and injects a venom into the rollicking songs. Vim and vigor still count for something with punk this rock (and rock this punk). At their apex, the band teeter on the brink of collapse, a leitmotif of abandon marking their craft. Lyrically, Young occasionally touches on the political ("Terrorist Attack"). For the most part, though, he bemoans his hangdog luck (most poignantly on "Go On Git Now," where he warns a paramour, "I know you'll be miserable"). The standouts are "Until The Day" and "Keep Falling Down," which boast swaggering Social Distortion riffs, and prove OWTH are arguably the strongest of No Idea's young guns. Though a splash of diversity wouldn't hurt, they succeed in delivering anthem-worthy punk-flavored nuggets. (NO IDEA) Casey Boland
