Not quite a hit; not quite a miss.

Lovedrug has mostly flown just below the radar since the release of their 2004 debut Pretend You're Alive, winning over only those with the patience to digest the subtle craftsmanship of frontman Michael Shepard's intuitive rock songs. Although the introspective, emotive numbers that compose their third disc, The Sucker Punch Show, lack the necessarily luster to engage a passing listener, Shepard's evident musical talent, smooth movements between piano and guitar and gravelly wail carry songs like the Muse-lite "Blood Like" and the moaning "Fake Angels" past less successful tracks. The guitar-driven song from which the album draws its title, "Everyone Needs A Halo," is the low point, with Shepard shrieking, "We're the semen that comes out way too fast." The seemingly tormented musician has certainly written more profound lyrics than this, but unfortunately it's that line which sticks in your head when the album ends-and not the carefully crafted songs surrounding it.
