Caleb Scofield’s vision caves in.

After freeing themselves from a major-label nightmare, the members of Cave In tried desperately to regain their lost credibility by putting out a so-so hardcore/metal record, Perfect Pitch Black. While the other band members moved in different directions, bassist Caleb Scofield took another stab at hard music, making a go of fronting his own band. The initial offering from Zozobra, 2006's Harmonic Tremors was a bit clumsy; not surprising, since Scofield had to move from the rhythm section to the front of the stage. Still, it worked. Now back for a second round with Bird Of Prey, Scofield is pushing his luck. Gone are the interesting harmonics and vocal nuances that made Tremors an endearing record. Bird Of Prey is all crunching guitars (when you can hear them) and growling vocals. A passable metal record? Yes. But Bird Of Prey is likely to become Scofield's albatross. (HYDRA HEAD) Oakland L.
