Hardcore heft with hooks.

We're all products of our environment, so it's not surprising that melodic hardcore quartet Static Radio should hail from New Jersey. Like a cross between the Bouncing Souls and Lifetime, they veer between hardcore breakdowns and rousing anthems on their full-length debut. They display admirable finesse given their thrash roots and often transcend them with keen writing. Breakup ballad "Fin" sounds almost like Billy Bragg, and if it weren't for the shouted vocals, "Green Hoody" could pass for indie rock, as could steely, shimmering highlight "Places." Those looking for the anxious rush of hardcore will appreciate the bluster of "State Lines" and "Ferren Decks," which achieve a fine balance of hooks and stomp. While not everything demonstrates the same spark, there's enough creativity and willingness to move beyond their comfort zone to be encouraged for their future. (BLACK NUMBERS) Chris Parker
