Max Cavalera is on some kind of world-beating hot streak.

Reuniting with his skin-bashing brother Iggor for the Cavalera Conspiracy earlier this year must have launched a red-hot dart up Max Cavalera's ass. The new Soulfly album is a furious, eclectic (in a good way, not a jam-band way), sonically adventurous metal disc that really should have been his only release of the year-it'll probably disappear into the long shadow cast by the Conspiracy's Inflikted, and if it does, that'll be a real shame. "Warmageddon" makes better use of faux-Egyptian guitar riffs than Nile ever have; "Unleash" sounds like a great lost Pantera track (admittedly, enlisting professional Phil Anselmo impersonator/Thowdown frontman Dave Peters for the track helps a lot when sounding like Pantera is your goal); "Touching The Void" crosses doom with world music and works; and that's just the beginning. Okay, Max still can't write a lyric to save his life, but on a purely musical level, Conquer is fucking awesome. (ROADRUNNER) Plato Shrimp
