Beauty and the Beast, take two.

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Sunday At Devil Dirt

When former Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell and former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan released their first collaboration, Ballad Of The Broken Seas, in 2006, the chemistry was obvious. Campbell wrote to Lanegan's strengths, penning songs about loaded guns, despair, salvation and/or retribution, setting them against stark piano, bluesy guitar or classy orchestral backdrops, and then hanging in the background to let Lanegan do all the heavy lifting. So it is again with Sunday At Devil Dirt. Though some of the songs are more sultry than dark, this overall effect of Lanegan up front and Campbell in the middle distance-angelic, ethereal, almost intangible-is the magic that makes their collaboration so memorable. For our money, Lanegan possesses the most distinguished voice in rock, whether it's solo or with the Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age, the Gutter Twins, etc., and Campbell seems to know it better than most.
