Various Artists - Like Black Holes In The Sky: The Tribute To Syd Barrett
Alternative Press - Steven Robertshaw on 3/16/09 @ 4:55 PM - altpress.com

[3.5/5]
In the mid-'60s, years before Pink Floyd recorded epic space-rock masterpieces Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, the band were meddling with psychedelic pop born from the LSD-bathed mind of original singer/guitarist, the late Syd Barrett, culminating in their groundbreaking 1967 debut The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. Although Barrett would get the boot soon after (thanks to a rapidly deteriorating mental state), the sounds he pioneered continue to challenge and inspire; Like Black Holes In The Sky is a fitting tribute to that legacy. With a diverse lineup of contributors from Dredg to Jesu, Black Holes offers numerous inventive takes on Barrett songs. Kylesa's groaning, detuned "Interstellar Overdrive" is a success, as is a dark and sludgy rendition of "Long Gone" by Unearthly Trance and the compressed crunch of Intronaut tackling "Arnold Layne." The whole thing is punctuated by Giant Squid's near seven-minute trip-out on "Octopus." Syd, this tab's for you. (DWELL) Brendan Manley
