The (International) Noise Conspiracy - The Cross Of My Calling

After 2005's patently awful Armed Love, it looked like Swedish ideologues the (International) Noise Conspiracy were poised to play Nickelback covers to handfuls of faded Refused T-shirts attached to blank looks. Fortunately, The Cross Of My Calling is far more spirited, creating a universe somewhere between Primal Scream's Rolling Stones phase and the Mars Volta's brand of jam science, with an occasional Bo Diddley beat ("Washington Bullets") thrown in. There are plenty of deft arrangements and engaging performances (especially from keyboardist Karl Jacobson and guitarist Lars Strömberg); plus, frontman Dennis Lyxzén seems more at home in his own skin instead of rolling around in the flaking eczema of his well-worn influences ("I Am The Dynamite," "Hiroshima Mon Amour"). At Cross' worst, you'd swear the band were jockeying for an opening slot on the Black Crowes' next tour ("Boredom Of Safety"). Fortunately, T(I)NC have delivered a soundtrack that will make you want to dance at their revolution. (VAGRANT/AMERICAN) Jason Pettigrew
