The M stands for melancholy, Marr.

Jason Martin has had ample time to tinker with his band's sound since he first made a name for himself as a guitar-happy shoegazer in the '90s. The latest incarnation of Starflyer 59 finds him in a reflective mood, treading softly, wielding a heavy heart and mostly skipping the guitar pedals. Instead, moody acoustic strumming and plinking keys ("The Brightest Of The Head") move the misery forward with a decidedly Smiths-ian bent. It doesn't hurt the comparison when Martin sings, "The saddest songs were wrote in minor keys/Like Johnny Marr, I want my 'Please, Please, Please,'" on the deceptively powerful opener "Minor Keys." The pace picks up with the thumping bass and high-end synth rush of "Concentrate" and "Taxi," but by and large, Dial M is just a bummer-in the best way possible. (TOOTH & NAIL) Luke O'Neil
