Hot Chip will own you
Hot Chip - The WarningPosted by Tim Karan on 08-Sep-06 @ 02:52 PM
[5/5] Hot Chip play pristinely recorded electro-soul that's both smart and punk enough to confuse mindless clubbers, but that comes loaded with enough ironic distance to alienate anyone paying attention to the frequent absurdity of the group's lyrics (sample: "Hot Chip will break your legs, snap off your head"). Fortunately, the music on The Warning is aces. Utilizing a kitchen-sink-by-Casio approach to instrumentation, without cluttering individual tracks, Hot Chip pull from absolutely everywhere. And whether it's the obvious (the Beta Band), the admitted (Prince, Stevie Wonder) or the subtle (MF Doom), Hot Chip strip down their influences, reworking scores of sound into new, distinctly original machinations. The album's most bombastic number, "Over And Over," is also the most brilliant, but the slow burn of "Colours" and the DFA-approved "(Just Like We) Breakdown" aren't far off.
