The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

[4/5] The label suits must be envisioning a R.E.M. v2.0 career arc for the Decemberists. Consider: Esoteric minor-label act gets big-league bucks to dominate the ears of the text-message generation (a la Death Cab For Cutie signing to Atlantic), and Capitol gets bragging rights about somebody other than Coldplay. But if you check the indie yearbook, frontman Colin Meloy was voted "most perspicacious" (defined as "acutely insightful and wise"-five-dollar word ed.) rather than "most popular," so the callow hearts of Laguna Beach won't be breaking to the tales of murder and rape that dominate The Crane WifeThe Crane Wife isn't automatic for the people yet, but it's far from green. ROCKS LIKE: Death Cab For Cutie's Plans • The Long Winters' When I Pretend To Fall • Robyn Hitchcock And The Egyptians' Queen Elvis
