Squarepusher - Hello Everything

[2/5] Tom Jenkinson has a pretty good track record in electronic music. He's always managed to stay ahead of the game in a genre that's always changing with the latest technology. However, on Hello Everything it seems he's hit a creative roadblock. His 10th release is a mellow effort that often sounds like a video game or anime soundtrack-which, minus the visuals, equals boring. To be fair, there are a few glimpses at the signature Squarepusher sound here, like the drum 'n' bass of "Planetarium" or "The Modern Bass Guitar." And while his resistance of categorization is definitely respectable, on this record it's just plain messy. The songs sound more like a collection of B-sides than a new album, and to put it bluntly, sound sort of generic. Though I'm sure it's going to be hard to ever top the genius of his past work, Hello Everything doesn't even come close. (WARP) Eddie Fleisher
