TRIUMPH OF LETHARGY SKINNED ALIVE TO DEATH - Dead RhythmPosted by Rachel Lux on 06-Apr-07 @ 12:08 PM
[2/5] It's likely that fans of the iconic Murder City Devils will clamor for the release of this record simply for the associated name value of ex-pats Spencer Moody (also of Dead Low Tide) and Dann Gallucci (also of Modest Mouse and A Gun Called Tension); that is, unless they're already familiar with Triumph Of Lethargy Skinned Alive To Death. And while Moody's description of Dead Rhythm as "the loneliest sounding record in the world" may be accurate, it's probably not for reasons the band intended; put simply, most people just won't want to hang out if this record is playing. That's because Dead Rhythm sets the mood with a sluggish, distorted, lo-fi drawl that frequently flirts with total cacophony-a sometimes unbearable abstractness that is likely to alienate and possibly offend most casual fans of music. Sure, it's all successfully desperate and artistically compelling; but can't experimental noise and analog fiddling sound more coherent? More like, say... music? Put simply, this deliberate, slow-mo train wreck isn't for the people-even the ones who are usually willing to try something new. Gloomy poets, however, have hit the jackpot.
