Still musing, still throwing down.
Kristin Hersh - Learn To Sing Like A Star
[3.5/5] The title of Kristin Hersh's 21st release in as many years mocks advice she's heard countless times since 1986 and failed to heed, first as frontwoman of the jarring, jangly alt-rock precursors Throwing Muses, later as the leader of the punky 50FootWave and intermittently as a solo artist. Despite her lack of commercial success-and probably because of it-the pained singer is one of Generation X's most consistent voices. Her eighth solo disc finds her hopped up on the Pixies and Nirvana
Unplugged: Soft-loud dynamics flow like bile, and cellist Martin McCarrick shares the spotlight with Hersh and her weeping electric guitar. Tubular bells chime on the chilly "Winter," which rings like a dark, heavy Christmas jam. Saturated with stark realism, her confessionals and fictions mark the grueling aftermath of pop's lovey-dovey daydreams. Hersh once again proves there's life after 29, and it's scary-and wonderful.
