Nothing ethereal abut this punchy Swedish pop.

Sondre Lerche - Phantom Punch

[3.5/5] Sondre Lerche has always been one sensitive soul, but the overly polite mix of jazz standards and low-key lounge on last year's Duper Sessions suggested the 24-year-old Norwegian prodigy was having a premature midlife crisis. (Either that, or he just wanted to pull some of British crooner Jamie Cullum's audience.) But Lerche pulls no punches on his fourth album. The opener, "Airport Taxi Reception," is powered by nervously scrubbed guitar and a funk bassline and brings some welcome snap and crackle back to Lerche's pop and folk. The rest of the disc, produced with plenty of in-your-face dryness by Tony Hoffer (Beck, the Kooks), energetically follows suit. Happily, the muscle hasn't affected Lerche's knack for a continentally smooth melody-making Phantom Punch, in a sense, the most sophisticated punk-pop you'll ever hear. (ASTRALWERKS) Dan LeRoy
