There's no time like now to discover Canada's best songwriter.
Ron Sexsmith - Time Being
[4/5] Shy, sensitive artists need supporters who'll shout their heroes' names into the corners the music is too quiet to reach. Over the years, everyone from Elvis Costello to Coldplay has shouted out Candian pop-folkie Ron Sexsmith, but he can't even count on the hipsters anymore, as a nation turns its lonely eyes (and ears) to the likes of Iron & Wine. Regardless, Sexsmith keeps doing what he's done every year or two since his 1995 debut: unveiling a dozen-odd new tunes whose quality is outdone only by their creator's modesty. Tastefully, transparently produced by old friend Mitchell Froom,
Time Being directs attention straight to Sexsmith's strengths: his comforting croon; Paul McCartneyesque melodies and wise, sometimes witty words ("Jazz At The Bookstore"). The focus on time and its ravages may seem to place this in 35-and-over territory, but Sexsmith's songs are timeless.
