Excelling at more than just the javelin.
Stars Of Track And Field - Centuries Before Love And War
[4/5] It's been a long time in the making, but Stars Of Track And Field have overcome several hurdles (bad pun intended) including losing their bass player and switching labels before releasing their debut full-length,
Centuries Before Love And War. The Portland, Oregon, trio jumped from the indie-pop category to indie-electronica when their bass player departed and the band chose to replace him digitally rather than audition new members. The result is a lush, layered backdrop for frontman Jason Bell's beautifully stark lyrics about war and what comes after. Blips and bleeps fill in all the places where a bass might add backbone, and it's not missed at all. While the entire album is a pleasure to listen to, standout gems include the soaring "With You" and the hypnotic "Yes/No/Yes/No/Yes/No" chorus on "Arithmatik." SOTAF may share a home region and sonic soundscapes with the likes of the Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie, but this record wins the gold medal for making a heavily rotated idea seem fresh again.
