Tough-guy trash metal-for tough guys

Chimaira - Resurrection

[3/5] With ballsy thrash riffery straight from the late-'80s speed-metal playbook, Chimaira deliver a huge album chock full of false harmonic squeals, pummeling double-time kick-drums and Mark Hunter's patented roar on Resurrection. Produced by knob-turner/czar Jason Suecof at his Audio Hammer studios in Florida, Resurrection finds Chimaira delving into typical manly subjects like taking a beating ("Pleasure In Pain"), becoming god-damned powerful ("Resurrection") and struggling with addiction ("Needle"), all of which carry less and less shock or heaviness as each song wears on. Hunter does mix things up vocally-he goes from a spooky-chant verse to a wide-open Jonathan Davis-like chorus on "Killing The Beast"-but generally prefers shredding his vocal chords over actually singing. While not a colossal stretch from 2005's self-titled release, Resurrection features some very bright spots: "Worthless" and "Empire" are undeniably rad thrash opuses, while "Six" features an instrumental section on par with Metallica's "To Live Is To Die."
