The kids will have their say. (The Terrible Twos)
The Terrible Twos - If You Ever See An Owl...
Since this release-If You Ever See An Owl..., the debut from Get Up Kids/New Amsterdams boss Matt Pryor's new side project-is purportedly aimed at children, it's only fair to have children evaluate it. So I spun the CDs for my own kids, ages 6 and 3; what follows are their unaltered, unedited reactions:
If You Ever See An Owl..., on the other hand, didn't elicit comments so much as it commanded the kiddos' attention and drew smiles from the first song onward. With the Terrible Twos -essentially the New Amsterdams for the preschool set-Pryor doesn't bother selling parents on his indie-cool factor: Rather, he uses unashamedly uncool language, kid-simple melodies and the same heart-on-sleeve honesty that defines his grown-up work to lure a new target audience. That Mom and Dad are likely to follow? Well, that's just gravy. (VAGRANT) Aaron Burgess
