Unsane - Visqueen
[4.5/5] It's too bad Unsane weren't able to pull off one of their famous "blood-bombings" in paranoid, post-9/11 New York City and capture it for
Visqueen's cover; we've never had a seven-out-of-five-stars editorial debate 'round the AP offices, and it's about time we did. The legendary Gotham City noise-rock trio have done nothing drastic to their gritty, bottom-heavy wall of sound. Instead, they've simply hankered down and spat out the best crop of songs they've ever written. Chris Spencer's voice is all irascible emotion and physical anguish in "Disdain" and the infectious clobber of "Last Man Standing," while the blues is violently strangled in "Windshield" and "This Stops At The River," the latter featuring ferocious harp-honking that works layered atop a riff already powerful enough to bring down a three-story walkup. "East Broadway" concludes with eight minutes of grime-coated, rhythmic sludge and sawblade samples that'd give even the most experienced meat-packer nightmares.
