William Tell - You Can Hold Me Down
[3/5] Three years after vacating his post as Something Corporate's rhythm guitarist, William Tell has resurfaced all grown up and, it seems, destined to become the latest poster boy for post-emo singer/songwriters. Like Tell's old pal Andrew McMahon (who drops by on "Fairfax (You're Still The Same)") or genre pioneer Chris Carrabba, Tell can turn tender melodrama into satisfying sing-alongs of sun-kissed chords and perfectly swollen choruses. But it's when Tell opts to tweak that formula that he really succeeds. That way, effortless driving anthems like "Slipping Under (Sing Along To Your Favorite Song)" stand in sharp contrast to the quietly bitter kiss-off and understated strings of "Like You, Only Sweeter." Nobody's hair gets everywhere, per se, but it's one of many moments related to love lost, found and renewed on
You Can Hold Me Down. And though it sometimes feels like a soundtrack to all the tender moments from the CW's spring season, it's also a surprisingly mature, if mostly by-numbers, turn from a musician who spent his formative years rocking out about punk rock princesses and running away from that Jordan guy.
