Ken Andrews - Secrets of The Lost Satellite

[4/5] Few artists are as prolific and consistent as cult fave Ken Andrews, the musical mad scientist behind legendary '90s space-rockers Failure, electro-geeks On and grungy shoegazers Year Of The Rabbit. Unsurprisingly, his new solo album, Secrets Of The Lost Satellite, is a comfortable combination of all three outfits and fits neatly within his existing canon. The spidery guitars and tar-sticky tempo of "Allergic" essentially update the Cure's Disintegration-another large influence on Andrews' work; the thundering "In Your Way" crescendos toward the heavens on a bed of shooting-star distortion and harmonic burnt sugar; and mincing electronic twitches creep menacingly through "Secret Things," as if they were fleeing from the last Nine Inch Nails record. Andrews' distinctive grayscale vocals, of course, fuse the disparate elements of Satellite. They're nicotine-gravely in some places, creaking with delicate sadness elsewhere, but forever obsessed with the glorious burden of introspection. (DINOSAUR FIGHT) Annie Zaleski
