Even in dark Times, Allen Epley shines.

The Life And Times - Suburban Hymns

[4] Shiner used trigonometric rhythms and hazy hooks to cultivate their fanbase; and, on the first full-length from his latest project, The Life And Times, former Shiner frontman Allen Epley still values complex fills and celestial riffs, building stark passages out of those cornerstones. On "Thrill Ride," the drums sound dank and desolate, like a knock on a dungeon door. Epley's guitar answers with a haunting, whistling-wind tone, and the elements exit, escorted by a mysterious Moog melody. "Muscle Cars," another misleadingly titled dirge, combines plodding punishment and erratic outbursts like a backfiring bulldozer. Epley's voice hovers over the wreckage, his misty falsetto documenting the damage. When it disappears, sometimes for sizable stretches, swirling noise plays the inscrutable narrator.
