Irepress - Samus Octology
[4/5] It may be a just a little weird to know that this Boston-area band have been given a stamp of approval of sorts by folks ranging from Masta Killa, Hatebreed and Inspectah Deck to Gym Class Heroes, Kayo Dot and Shadows Fall. This bizarre cross-section of artists are all bands Irepress have inexplicably shared the stage with. It's doubly weird when you consider the band's own expansive and dynamic style falls somewhere between prog-fusion death metal legends Cynic and post-metal heroes Isis. That Irepress are instrumental makes the above equation all the more difficult to follow-nay, understand. Regardless, the music Irepress meticulously compose is undeniably beautiful and spine-tingling. Their juxtaposition of metallic, brain-teasing guitars and Sigur Rós-inspired textural ambience is sublime. Their ability to carve massive-sounding odes while deftly balancing complexity and simplicity is artistically brilliant. Still, one can't help but wonder what Ol' Dirty Bastard would say. Probably something unintelligible.
