Good Christian boys struggle to find themselves.
The Fold - Secrets Keep You Sick
[2.5/5] If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, a whole lot of bands are going to feel great when they listen to
Secrets Keep You Sick. Granted, it's hard to make your mark in the jam-packed pop-rock world. But instead of working at doing just that, these good Christian boys use their second album to cherry-pick styles-and risk losing themselves in the process. Want to dance, dance to an anthemic Fall Out Boy song? Cool, there's "Medicine," touting the therapeutic message of music with lines like "I've seen you laugh and cry/I wanna see you dance." Listen closely to "Younger Than Our Years." Sounds a shade too close to the All-American Rejects' "Move Along," doesn't it? Or how about building to a traditional Foo Fighters climax? Fast-forward to about halfway through "Down In Doubt And Living Without." No, the Fold aren't a bad band. When they set out to accomplish a sound, they hit the mark: The synth twist of "Faster Still" or the huge closer "Revisited" prove they've got the musical chops and the ability to say something meaningful. The Fold just need to hone their identity as much as their message.
