Pop music in disguise.
Look Mexico - This is Animal Music
[4/5]As cliché as it may be, don't judge a book by its cover. With song titles like "Dude, You Have A Bazooka" and "Comin' In Hot With A Side Of Bacon," paired with pictures of the Tallahassee, Florida, foursome in their skivvies with greasy pepperoni pizza all over their entangled bodies, one might not expect Look Mexico to come well-stacked with musicianship. However, frontman Matt Agrella's earnest vocals mesh perfectly over the band's concoction of pop with hints of post-punk and math rock on their full-length debut, This Is Animal Music. They create unpretentious, sophisticated pop songs with catchy, off-beat drumming, producing memorable hooks with intricate guitar riffs reminiscent of American Football. Whereas sonically they share familiar ground with Minus The Bear, their melodies are organically their own. This Is Animal Music maintains a grounded sense of lightheartedness-which allows the band to do things like occasionally perform in full medieval armor.
