Ramshackle quirk rock for the thinking stoner.

Vrktm - Excess/Defect

[3.5/5]

Any album with righteously bad song titles like "Skull Mountain," "Slay" or "Sword And Fire" has a lot to live up to, which Excess/Defect does fairly well, but probably not how you might think. Don't let the Dungeons & Dragons nomenclature of the album's track list fool you into expecting Mastodon heaviness or Valient Thorr style-this is lo-fi, quirky art rock that teeters between a Come On Pilgrim-era Pixies feel ("Florida Son") and the spacey ambience of a peyote party at Gibby Haynes double-wide ("Black Jasmine"). While most of the album will bite you with its dulled, cavity ridden choppers, there are plenty of moments that could be mistaken for being mildly melodic-the miasmic prog of "Vivian Girls" moves with an appealing crawl while "Common Blood" sounds like watching the sunrise from a freeway onramp after an all night meth binge. Not that we've ever done that. (NOISE POLLUTION) Casey Lynch
