The title’s quite accurate, mate.
Echoboy - Elektrik Soul Psymphonie
[4/5] Years before Neu! and Can-worshipping cats like Whitey, Fujiya & Miyagi and 120 Days, Echoboy (Richard Warren) was trafficking in Krautrockin' motorik propulsion, kicky indie-rock/dance hybrids, and mesmerizing dronescaping on his 2000 companion discs, Volume One and Volume 2. His 2002 album Giraffe signaled a shift toward a more song-oriented approach but was much less enthralling. However, with Elektrik Soul Psymphonie, Echoboy telegraphs his haughty ambitions. Warren clearly is attempting a grand artistic statement with this 20-track opus, as he combines all of his previous tricks and tics and adds some new ones for good measure. With its vast and cleverly deployed sonic palette, Psymphonie never settles for too long in one style. Grandiose, melodic space rock; thorny post-punk; wonky tinkering with extreme frequencies; bizarre chanting; mutant blues-Echoboy puts his distinctive stamp on them all on this definitive aesthetic manifesto.
