Just Jack spends a good bit of Overtones working a loose conversational flow that comes on like a cross between the Streets and Ian Dury while the bass-fueled grooves recall the good times Chic had sneaking funk through disco's back door. The character sketches feel like finished portraits, from the Paris Hilton-type out for a soul-sucking night on the town in "Disco Friends" to the Britney-esque starlet whose downfall is plastered all over the tabloids in "Starz In Their Eyes." And when he trains that eye for detail on himself, his words are often colored by a self-effacing awareness: See the album's token tribute to the good old days, "Hold On," in which he memorably intones with a sigh, "You know you're getting older when the kids on the corner have you baffled every time they speak." You'd think the fact that Elton John enjoys Just Jack records would have tipped him off. (TVT) Ed Masley
