Old school fury still sounds fresh.

The Wednesday Night Heroes - Guilty Pleasures

[3.5/5]

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada's punk revivalists the Wednesday Night Heroes deliver a bracing, nitro-juiced third album with Guilty Peasures, handling the high-throttle hardcore rhythms with a steady hand; leaning into the chunky, shout-along choruses; and blasting through the straightaways with the revolutionary zeal of children weaned on a steady diet of Cockney Rejects and Minor Threat. Like the Casualties, the Heroes prefer the energetic, anti-establishmentarianism of Oi!, though the hefty riffs sometimes recall Pennywise. The quickened pulse of tracks such as "Dead End Street" and "Uncivilized Bastard" don't shortchange melody, and it's hard to suppress a smile when lead singer Graeme MacKinnon intones, "When they say street-punk is through, just look 'em down and say, 'Fuck you,'" at the end of "All On The Outside." At just under thirty minutes, the dozen songs fly by with barely enough time to catch your breath. (BYO) Chris Parker
