Exploring the dark side of the tune.
Liars - Liars
Liars have come a long way since 2002's They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top. Initially, they forged urgent, angsty and angular post-punk that evoked the au courant influences saturating the early-'00s Williamsburg, Brooklyn, scene (Gang Of Four, ESG, A Certain Ratio, etc.). During the last five years, though, Liars changed members, moved from Brooklyn to Berlin, and shifted into a darker mode, culminating with 2006's bizarre Drum's Not Dead. The group's self-titled fourth album may be the maverick trio's most straightforward yet. But even at its catchiest, Liars is weird. Angus Andrew's eerie falsetto colors every song and Julian Gross' drums often stampede in odd meters and with nervy urgency. The fuzz-bombing Psychocandy homage "Freak Out" will likely earn the most radio play, but there is plenty of mutant garage rock, surging prog-punk and druggy reveries to haunt adventurous souls for years.
