FILE UNDER: Glam-rock redux

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster - III
Alternative Press - Scott Heisel on 7/1/09 @ 7:00 AM - altpress.com

[1.5/5]

On previous albums, we appreciated the Lynyrd Skynyrd-meets-metalcore stylings of this Alabama band best known for featuring ex-Underoath vocalist Dallas Taylor. Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster used to be fairly adept at cranking out seedy Southern rawk with a Warped Tour twist. On III, however, the band are sounding more Cinderella than sludge--and not in a good way. A few songs, such as the second track, "Settling Scores By Burning Bridges," retain some of what made the band interesting on previous albums. Others, like the simplistic "The Old Iron Hills" and the outright redonkulous "No Good Son," just sound like third-tier '80s glam rock. But by far the biggest perpetrator is the sappy power ballad "Listen Close," which inexplicably employs the oldest glam gimmick in the book--the talk box effects pedal. A talk box? Are you serious? Hey guys, Richie Sambora called, he wants his schtick back. (FERRET) Jason Schreurs

I've honestly gotten a little bored with this band...I have the first 2 albums, but they didn't really expand their sound at all on the 2nd album. Naming the 2nd album II was appropriate because it was really just continuing what they did in the first album, but now III? I'm getting tired of it all sounding the same and not really getting better...

1.5?????? SERIOUSLY. Could not disagree more. This album blows I and II away. I've always loved the old maylene but this new album is without a doubt their best yet. It's badass southern rock at its finest, which is what Maylene is all about. "Listen Close" Is one of the best songs on the record. Who cares if its not "metal" enough. Not to mention "step up" is one the best songs I've heard in a long time.

btlifk is right on point. Im suprized to not see more comments on this review. First Waiting on my dead bed... just wow crickets and rattle snake build up then in comes the bango, i was i knew right there the cd was a 5/5. Step up is just down rigth a classic, old iron hills aswell. But oh lonely grave is a nothing short then a masterpiece ps if anyone knows the name of the old man that sings in that song let me know pls :D. All in all you just cant make the same cd over and over or else people get tired but if you try different approches sure youll lose some fans but gain 2x as more. For me tho I, II, III kicks ass and cant wait for IV.

I couldn't believe my eyes, when I saw that you gave MATSOD'S new record a 1.5!!! Are you effing kidding me?? This whole cd kicks everything else out there right now on its ass! "oh boo hoo every song doesn't sound heavy like Caution, dangerous curves ahead, I'm going to give it a bad review because Im just a grown up scene kid, and who doesn't know good music when it's kicking me in the effing face"!!!! I just couldn't believe that you would give III such a bad review. Then I saw that you gave generic as crap, cookie-cutter metal band like devildriver's new cd a 4.5/5. Then I realized that you don't know what you're talking about and I felt better! LONG LIVE SOUTHERN METAL!!

HolyHollywood!
There was no I. And maybe the person reviewing the album shouldn't be from ferret ......just sayin'. If this album sounds like glam rock to you, then FILE UNDER: bitter journalist.
