Take the Blue pill

The combination of late-'80s D.C. emo with prog-rock time signatures, experimental jazz chords and the occasional blast-beat doesn't really give a clear picture of what Capsule are trying to do, but it's a start. Their long-in-the-works debut album, Blue, consists of 10 tracks titled "One" to "Ten," each one specifically using the drums to move smoothly from shrieking bursts of noise into intense yet melodic guitars. Yet the busier the songs get, the more they wear on the listener. "Six" starts with a grindcore beat and swirling metallic guitar sweeps before moving into what might be considered a conventional breakdown, but after five similar movements, the dramatic effect is lost. While each song is ferociously beautiful, the band could benefit from some diversity. (ROBOTIC EMPIRE; roboticempire.com) Jesse Raub
