Hip-hop’s sweetheart brings the jams and the sass
Kid Sister - Dream DateAlternative Press - Editorial Intern on 5/19/09 @ 12:01 PM - altpress.com
Kid Sister has plenty of star power on her side: J2K of party-starting DJ duo Flosstradamus is her little brother, and her single "Pro Nails" features Kanye West. But the Chicago rapper's debut album, Dream Date, doesn't need big-name cameos to prop up its music. Instead, Technicolor sonics and her irresistible personality drive Dream Date's tunes, which are a note-perfect juxtaposition of old-school sensibility and modern production. The aerobic workout "Switch Board" is an insane club jam driven by booty-shaking rhythms and Kid's Pepa-like raspy vocals. Carefree hip-hop beats and sassy playground rhymes mingle with neon-hued electro and sleek video-game blips on "Beeper" and "Get Fresh," while a David Banner verse anchors the playful mid-'80s soul-funk gem "Family Reunion." Even Date's less-danceable moments-a brassy remake of the Queen Latifah/Monie Love classic "Ladies First" with British chanteuse Estelle and the a cappella "You Ain't Really Down"-bristle with energy. Fun without being frivolous or dumb, the album lives up to pre-release hype and solidifies Kid Sister as the fiercest new hip-hop female on the block. (DOWNTOWN; downtownrecordings.com) Annie Zaleski
