Review by Robert Ham

Aren't the boys in City Lights a little too young to be griping about getting older? Yet, that's exactly what they do on their debut album. These fresh-faced pop-punkers spend the entirety of "Please Let Me Know" venting their spleen about kids these days "talking shit on the Internet" and singer Oshie Bichar missing the days when he "had the entire world at my feet and not a worry on my mind." For some young-ish fans, this is going to be a new mantra to use in their daily fret sessions. But for us older folks, get ready to hear the cries of "Get over youryelf!" In fact, if you're over the age of 30, you will likely find yourself saying that a lot as you listen to In It To Win It.

After they are done bemoaning the good old days, they spend some time calling out a young maneater ("Trophy Room"), and raking flavor-of-the-month punk bands over their lukewarm coals ("I Made A Song On Garage Band And All I Got Was This Lousy Record Deal"). At least the closing "What It Takes" expresses some honest sentiments about facing an uncertain future. Everywhere else, it is the sound of five young men taking themselves far too seriously.

City Lights should keep the strongest elements of their sound—chiefly their fine punk riffage and boundless energy—and embrace their youthfulness as completely as they do on "Just In Case," where Bichar sings about partying with his crew. Have the band mine their Twitter feeds for lyrical inspiration ("Just got told I look like the dude from Breathe Carolina. I really need to cut my hair," "I'm so thirsty but too lazy to leave my bed. Whenever I get up I'm going to get v8, purple Gatorade, and dr pepper and drink em all!"). Leave the backwards glances and bitter ruminations about lost opportunities until your 10th album.

Why?

12/14/2011 - 4:28pm by Chris Methods

This review as well as the horrendous review of "Bad Habits" by Every Avenue is why I cancelled my subscription to AP. As a freshly minted 30 year old, I understand that in today's world, kids have to grow up so much quicker then ever before. Not knowing what the members of City Lights has gone through personally, I can only take them at face value, and enjoy their point of views. The music is some of the best pop punk I have heard in quite some time, and they most definitely have made a fan out of me. I hope that in the future, reviewers can stop putting their own bravado over the substance, just like I feel City Lights did on "In It To Win It."

Wow

Honestly, reviewers should never judge on lyrics seriously you don't know what the person is going through or why they wrote it. And they are right even myself at 20 can see that friggen young kids these days are so different and more messed up then i was at that age.

Awesome Album

Idk about this review. I mean you really don't know a band members life and what they're writing about. So the lyrics may be from a past experience. However, I think this album is legit and I've been waiting since the "Rock like a Party Star - EP" for them to put out new stuff.

Haven't I heard this before?

Oh yeah, I have. Ever listened to Hit Lights' album "Skip School, Start Fights"? City Lights literally steals riffs straight from that album. They should quit trying to mooch off of other people's success.

Srsly?

Yeah AP, I dont get it... This is a really solid release, I'll assume that they're college age, early 20's or whatever, and I feel the same way they do in a lot of their songs. I'm 20 years old, and I already feel like I've grown up so much, and want to get back to the days when I was a kid. I think you should give this CD a re-listen, and a re-review

being over 30... just like the bitter aging scenester that reviewed these guys... I'm just happy someone is still playing this style and doing better then must... this album is epic... it's sad that as punkers get older that forget were they came from... we freaks, nerds, and our hearts glow... it's sad people lose that... 15... 30... 60... im staying young... get over yourself guy!
