E For Explosion - Hold Grudges Not Hands EP

Released: November 23, 2010 Self-released

At first listen, E For Explosion sound like happy times. But peek beneath the surface, and this project from former JamisonParker member Jamison Covington is actually caustic and angry. The music is pretty tame, like a cross between Weezer (or, at the very least, the Rentals) and pop-emo like Say Anything, but the lyrics are something else completely. Seems this dude has had some trouble with the ladies, as all four songs here follow the theme of “she dumped me and now I’m pissed.” Although that sounds like a recipe for whining and juvenility, Covington actually makes the juxtaposition of safe, boppy tunes and harsh, paranoid lyrics work. It’s especially effective on the acoustic-guitar fueled “Blankets And Blonde Hair,” where the guy hasn’t even gone out with the chick yet and he’s already singing, “I barely even know you and you’re already killing me.” Sure, buddy needs to take a chill pill, but he knows how to write a mean pop song. Literally.
