AP Rating:

On their fourth full-length, Utah’s the Used have delivered not only the definitive album of their career, but arguably one of the best records you’ll hear in 2009. Every track comes armed with a truly stratospheric chorus, yet no two songs tread the same path. The band explore a variety of moods as they churn through adrenaline-fueled monsters (“Sold My Soul”), groove-heavy pop anthems (“Come Undone”), ominous rockers (“Meant To Die”) and occasional deviations into more delicate territory (“Kissing You Goodbye”). Throughout, the confessional tone of Bert McCracken’s lyrics and vocal delivery are matched by the band’s ferociously raw but meticulous playing, with the pristine production of Matt Squire (Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low) making everything sound massive. Refusing to allow the listener a single moment to catch their breath, Artwork truly is a deeply moving and sonically magnificent achievement.
