David Moore - My Lover, My StrangerScott Heisel on 6/26/09 @ 7:00 AM
If you were an old Chamberlain (or even older Split Lip) fan who got really jazzed when the band announced reunion shows earlier this year, you'll probably be quite let down if you give Chamberlain/Split Lip frontman David Moore's long-delayed solo disc a spin. The disc's 12 songs span 55 minutes (Trash Talk could play, like, eight sets in that time period), and there's absolutely nothing here for fans of Moore's banshee wail from his younger years.
That's not to say these songs aren't good, because many of them are--some border on great, even. Fans of Chamberlain's later work (The Moon My Saddle-era onward) will find plenty to enjoy, as will mainstream music listeners who can't wait until the next Train record drops. Many tracks broach the five-minute mark, loaded with grandiose arrangements (string and horn sections are not uncommon) and Moore's soaring, soulful, gorgeous vocals. The Beatles-esque "Forgiven" is a highlight, as is the flat-out-incredible piano ballad "When You Fall," which easily could've been a Chamberlain track. "Beautiful Now" is the most well-rounded number, with a slick country riff and horn punches and piano plunks accenting a radio-ready chorus. It's the kind of music you'd expect to see played live on the TODAY show, only not shitty. (DOGHOUSE) Scott Heisel
