D.O.A.’s best in years. Seriously.

After an astonishing 30 years, some things are expected from D.O.A. albums. Rightly, all of these elements appear on Northern Avenger: lyrics oscillating between socio-political ("Police Brutality," "Crossfire") and good-time silliness ("Donnybrook," "Devil's Speedway"), a few ska/reggae-influenced tunes ("Poor Poor Boy," "Set Them Free") and a bunch of hardcore scorchers (the opening trio rule, especially the California-skewering "Golden State"). This isn't to say it rivals the Joey Shithead-led collective's untouchable late-'70s/early-'80s fare. But with classic-era bassist Randy Rampage aboard and fabulous tracks like the nostalgic "Still A Punk" and "Mountains That We Climbed," the folksy "This Machine Kills Fascists" (recalling Win The Battle's standout "Junk City Nowhere"),"Last Chance" and its edgier addendum "California Hardcore Last Chance," it's one of D.O.A.'s best in recent memory.
