FILE UNDER: Deathcore
Job For A Cowboy - RuinationScott Heisel on 6/29/09 @ 7:00 AM
From 2007's Genesis to Ruination has been quite a journey for Job For A Cowboy. Reviled by the gatekeepers of scene cred, they've nevertheless managed to get their brand of technical deathcore to a big chunk of the American metal-buying public on package tours and at festivals. On their second Metal Blade disc, they've refined their sound into a razor-sharp, barbed weapon. Vocalist Jonny Davy sounds like two people as he alternates between a guttural death growl and an almost black-metal shriek. Behind him, his bandmates' riffs and pummeling double-bass rhythms combine the intricacy of Decapitated with the raw fury of Darkest Hour. Drummer Jon Rice is particularly well served by the album's mix, never sounding like he's playing practice pads. The extended, doom-filled title track shows a different side of the band, with slow, churning riffs erupting across the landscape like oil fires in the desert. Some of the songs could definitely have used a guitar solo to complete the musical catharsis (even the song with "Masturbation" in the title doesn't have one, which seems like an oversight), but Ruination mixes tech-death precision with expressionist hardcore rage quite ably, and marks Job For A Cowboy as a band fully deserving of their success.
